A hit-and-run driver admits fault in accident that killed family

A 31-year-old Vista, California, man will be sentenced to a term of 124 months in state prison on May 5, 2017 after pleading guilty to both vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run charges on Monday, April 3, 2017. In accepting the plea deal offered by the San Diego County Prosecutor's Office, the man admitted that he was responsible for having caused the fatal car crash on Sept. 10, 2016.

That accident, which occurred along Interstate 15, claimed the lives of a 64-year-old grandmother and her 2-year-old granddaughter. The elder victim's adult daughter and 5-year-old daughter were both critically injured in the accident.

Upon seeing the devastation he had caused, the man fled the scene of the accident. He was apprehended by police at his home a few hours later.

Both the deceased and injured victims in this case were traveling southbound along I-15 at around 2:00 a.m., in their Honda when their car was struck from the rear by the defendant's Cadillac CTS. The impact of the accident caused their vehicle to become disabled. California Highway Patrol reports that it was then that the Honda was also struck by a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck.

In pretrial hearings in the case, prosecutors were unable to provide proof that the defendant was under the influence of either drugs or alcohol at the time the accident occurred. Thus, when arraigned, prosecutors had dropped those allegations from the list of charges the man was facing.
