Encinitas mom struck and seriously injured while leaving work

A 33-year-old mother was struck by a Ford F-150 truck while crossing the street at Encinitas Boulevard near its intersection with Vulcan Street on Friday, Sept. 22. The woman had reportedly just gotten off of work at Lazy Acres and was walking to catch the coaster back home at around 7:30 p.m.

Pedestrian accidents are up by 11 percent in recent years

A new report, published by the Governors Highway Safety Association, suggests that pedestrians are at even higher risk now for injuries than they ever were previously. In fact, they report that just last year alone, the rate of pedestrian fatalities went up by at least 11 percent from the previous year. It's believed that alcohol consumption and the use of cellphones is at least partially responsible for a large number of these deaths.

When and where pedestrian accidents are most apt to occur

While going places by foot may allow you to get in that much needed exercise and fresh air, it can be a fairly unsafe option. In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 70,000 pedestrians are injured each year. Of those, 4,000 lose their lives.

A 22-year-old Oceanside man was arrested on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, on suspicion of having caused a fatal hit-and-run accident back on April 16. The fatal crash, which occurred near 1400 Mission Avenue, claimed the life of a 63-year-old woman, one day before her birthday.

A 10-year-old boy was severely injured when a car came barreling into the front yard of his Colton home at around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 13, 2017. The accident, which happened along La Cadena Drive's 1100 block, resulted in the boy suffering what firefighters have described as multiple broken bones.

A pedestrian is struck and killed in poorly-lit area near Vista

A 38-year-old male pedestrian was struck and killed just outside of Vista's city limits on May 10, 2017. The decedent and a friend were walking westbound near the shoulder of Santa Fe Avenue just south of Montgomery Drive when a passing motorist's car struck the man.

Fatal pedestrian accidents highest in California, data shows

When it comes to pedestrians, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) statistics from 2015, pedestrians and bicyclists that were killed as a result of being struck by automobiles added up to 17.7 percent of the some 35,092 traffic fatalities that same year. That percentage equates to some 818 bicyclists and 5,376 pedestrians killed that year.

What can be done about pedestrian fatalities in California?

At one point or another, all of us are pedestrians - whether we are crossing an intersection or walking a farther distance. Although we'd like to think that we are safe while on foot, the unfortunate reality is we may be putting our lives at risk.
