Fatal pedestrian accidents highest in California, data shows

When it comes to pedestrians, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) statistics from 2015, pedestrians and bicyclists that were killed as a result of being struck by automobiles added up to 17.7 percent of the some 35,092 traffic fatalities that same year. That percentage equates to some 818 bicyclists and 5,376 pedestrians killed that year.

In cases in which death doesn't result, sustaining significant injuries is quite common as well. As for the types of injuries victims of pedestrian accidents are suffering, tripping or falling on damaged sidewalks, stones, or holes accounts for 51 percent of all non-fatal pedestrian accidents. Some 12 percent are struck by cars and 6 percent involve some type of interaction with wildlife.

Of those injured in pedestrian accidents, statistics from both the NHTSA and Insurance Institute of for Highway Safety cite that, of all pedestrians killed in accidents in 2014, 70 percent were males and averaged 47-year-of-age. Additionally, those same statistics show that some 73 percent of fatal pedestrian accidents occurred in urban areas with 26 percent of those occurring at dusk or between 6 and 8:59 in the evening.

When it comes to those killed in the fatal pedestrian accidents, at least 34 percent were found to have been intoxicated with a blood concentration (BAC) of at least 0.08 g/dL by the time toxicology tests were taken. At the same time, some 14 percent of the drivers involved in striking pedestrians had BAC levels of at least 0.08 g/dL.

California ranks highest among all states in terms of the number of annual pedestrian fatalities it had that survey year at 697. Florida and Texas, with 588 and 476 fatalities each respectively, ranked second and third.
