A 6-year-old San Ysidro boy was hospitalized with severe head injuries on Tuesday, May 9, after his family's car was struck by an allegedly drunk driver. A border patrol officer with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement division that was patrolling in the area came across the disabled car that had struck a guardrail and was turned around in traffic.
The young boy and his family were returning from a trip to Disneyland and had just stopped off at In-N-Out to get the boy a milkshake when they were struck. The boy was sitting in one of the rear passenger seats in the vehicle when the accident occurred.
When emergency crews arrived on the scene, it was determined that he had sustained severe head injuries. He had emergency surgery as soon as he arrived at the hospital.
Witnesses to the 11:30 p.m. accident at the intersection of Dairy Mart Road and Camino de la Plata reported having seen the defendant in this case driving quickly around a corner and squealing his wheels immediately proceeding the accident. These witness observations ultimately led officers to a damaged Chevy pickup truck at the intersection of Corte Amalia and Vista Lane some 30 minutes later.
The man was arrested and charged with a number of crimes including driving without a license, hit-and-run, and DUI. These charges carry a potential seven year sentence. The man's bail was set at $230,000.
Immigration officials are reported as saying that he has been deported at least 15 times over the past 15 years. A case for deportation has also been opened against the man by immigration officials.
Drunk driving is responsible for claiming thousands of lives each year and injures many more. Injured victims or families of those killed by drunk drivers can learn of their rights to recover damages associated with lost wages, medical and funeral costs, and other related expenses by taking time to speak with a Vista car accident attorney.
