2 are killed, 2 seriously injured in La Mesa SR-125 truck crash

Two adults lost their lives and six others, including two children, were seriously injured along the La Mesa portion of State Route 125 (SR 125) on Wednesday, Aug. 2. The three-car crash occurred as a tractor-trailer jackknifed at the roadway's transition onto eastbound Interstate 8 near the Murray Drive exit.

The trucker, who had been traveling in the northbound direction along SR 125 at around 2:30 p.m. that day, reportedly drifted across several of that freeway's lanes. She struck two different cars before ultimately coming to rest in the southbound lanes.

One of those vehicles, a dark green sedan, was carrying two women inside. They died immediately upon impact.

Riding in the other vehicle, a black SUV, were two adults and four children. That vehicle's front seat passenger and one of the kids, a 6-year-old girl, both suffered severe injuries in the crash.

That child had initially not been found breathing when emergency crews first arrived at the crash scene. However, as they transported her to Rady Children's Hospital, they were able to get her to start doing so on her own once again. Once there, she was diagnosed as having broken her neck. California Highway Patrol later reported that she had not been restrained in a child safety seat at the time of the crash.

As for the other passengers in the SUV at the time, they all suffered relatively minor injuries in the crash. They were only transported to area hospitals as a precautionary measure.

The logo on the side of the truck involved in the crash indicates that it was being operated on behalf of Swift at the time. A statement released by the carrier confirmed that two individuals riding in the truck at the time suffered only minor injuries in the crash.

They also noted that they were sending their own safety crews to the crash scene to investigate why their driver drifted across multiple lanes and crashed into multiple cars before ultimately jackknifing.

Jackknife accidents, especially freeway ones, generally occur because the driver was traveling at a speed too fast for conditions. As a result, they tend to result in more significant injuries than slow speed accidents. If you've been struck and injured by a tractor-trailer, then a Vista, California, truck accident attorney can provide you with guidance as to whether you may eligible to file an injury claim in your case.
