Your injuries could be worse than you think after a car wreck

Imagine driving through Ocean Side on your way to work. You follow your usual route and stop at your typical café for a cup of coffee. All in all, it is a classic Monday for you.

Unfortunately, the day became unusual when another car ran a stop light and hit the passenger side of your car. Since other commuters were on the road and in a hurry to get to work, a couple more cars became involved in the accident.

While your car looks like it is probably totaled, you do not seem to be suffering from any severe injuries. You don't feel like you have any broken bones and you're not bleeding badly from any cuts, so surely you do not need to go to the hospital.

Sometimes, it can take several hours or several days before you start experiencing the symptoms of an internal injury. In some cases, these injuries can actually be life threatening. If you are in a car wreck, watch for these delayed injury symptoms.

It is not uncommon to experience a headache within a few days of a car accident. While, in some cases, this might be due to a mild neck or back strain, in other cases, this could be the sign of a serious condition. Since a headache can signal a blood clot, concussion or other severe injury, you should see a doctor as soon as you begin to feel pain in your head after an accident.

Stiffness in the neck or shoulders

If you suffered whiplash in the collision, you might begin to feel stiffness in your neck or shoulders within a few days. Even a low-speed crash can result in this kind of injury. This means that even if you do not think the wreck was bad, you should still seek a medical opinion if you feel discomfort in your neck.

Back pain

It only takes a small amount of force to cause damage to your muscles, ligaments or nerves. If you were the victim of a rear-end or side collision, you could experience back pain. In accidents that have a high degree of force, you could even suffer damage to your spine.

Swelling or pain in your abdomen

If you notice signs of swelling in your abdomen or you are experiencing pain in that area, you could suffer from internal bleeding. Also, any deep purple bruising or dizziness might indicate an internal injury. Since this condition can be fatal, seek emergency treatment immediately if you have any of these symptoms.

If you have suffered an injury due to a car accident with a negligent driver, you might be able to file a claim for damages. You may also be able to take legal action if you have trouble collecting fair compensation from the other driver's insurer.
