What are reasons pedestrian accidents occur?

Over the next few weeks, we'll be ushering in the spring. It's during this time of the year that more of us are likely to take to the streets for either excercise, festivals or even to get to work. While walking from place to place may seem like an ideal option, it comes with inherent dangers too.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data reflects that some 70,000 pedestrians suffer injuries when struck by automobiles each year. Another 4,000 lose their lives. At least 11 percent of Americans get around on foot on a daily basis. Of those, only 13 percent of them will be struck by a car.

Children ages 14 and under and seniors 66 or older are the two groups that are most apt to be struck by cars while out walking. They account for 34 percent of all pedestrian injuries and 27 percent of their deaths. At least 90 percent of walkers are struck on sunny days when people take to the streets at higher rates.

NHTSA data suggests that motorists are often not to blame for pedestrian accidents, but instead the person on foot is.

At least two-thirds of all pedestrians who are struck are hit while walking down city streets or after they're forced off the sidewalk and into the roadway by bicyclists.

Also, while using unmarked crosswalks often gets pedestrians injured or killed, motorists failing to yield to the right of way of walkers using marked ones also happens quite a bit.

While many states forbid texting and driving among drivers, the same laws don't apply to pedestrians. One study conducted by New York University researchers found that some 8 percent of all pedestrians struck are distracted by either their music device or cellphone.

Quiet cars make it easy for motorists to sneak up on pedestrians without them noticing. Pedestrians often are struck in arterial roads under construction, where they're forced to walk out on the road or when intoxicated motorists travel outside of their lanes. Pedestrians wearing dark clothing are difficult to see, especially at night, making them waiting targets to be hit.

If you or someone you love has been either seriously injured or killed while out walking, then a Vista pedestrian accidents attorney can advise you of your right to file a lawsuit in your case.
